A chop is a football skill in which a player suddenly changes direction to deceive a defender and create space.
The aim of a chop is to unbalance the defender and create time or space to make a pass, take a shot, or continue dribbling.
The move usually starts with the player dribbling at speed.
As the defender approaches, make it look as though you are going to continue in the same direction, but …
⚽️
Then, place your plant foot beside the ball and use the inside of your foot to suddenly cut the ball back or knock it diagonally in the opposite direction.
⚽️
This often causes the defender to overrun the ball, allowing you to accelerate away quickly.
Focus on timing — perform the chop only when the defender is close enough.
⚽️
Keep your body relaxed but be ready to accelerate immediately after the chop.
⚽️
Use your arms to maintain balance and make the feint more convincing.
⚽️
Practise the move with both feet so that you remain unpredictable to defenders.
